Deck-a-Week Challenge: Week 3 – The Deviant Moon Tarot

Greetings & Blessings. I hope everyone is having a lovely, tarot filled day!

Deviant Moon By Patrick Valenza

Deviant Moon Tarot Borderless Edition

Sunday marked the end of my third and final week doing my deck challenge. To read about the challenge click here.

This past week I worked with the Deviant Moon Tarot by Patrick Valenza. I love this deck and I was very excited to work with it.

I used the deck in my daily draws and for a couple personal spreads, including the large birthday reading that I did for myself.

Unfortunately this deck doesn’t have a companion book or guidebook which I would have loved to work with. The images are so complex and there is a ton of symbolism that I want a better grasp of. The good news is that according to the Deviant Moon Facebook page, US Games Systems has the manuscript for a companion book in hand and it should be released early next year. Here is the post. I’m really excited! I think a full guidebook will be incredibly useful.

Deviant Moon Tarot – Four Card Spread

One thing that I found very interesting to do while working with this deck was to consider the phases of the moon pictured in each card (each card has a moon in it somewhere.). That way I could gauge the intensity of each card’s energy within a spread and incorporate that information into my readings. For example in the four card spread pictured above, the waning moon is featured in the Ace of Wands, which indicates that the Ace energy is waning. This matches its spread position beautifully, since its the card of the Past. Likewise the waxing moon is featured in the King of Pentacles card which indicates that the King’s energy is growing and becoming stronger, it is in the Future position, so that also lines up. The full moon in both center cards, the Present and the crossing card, emphasize the intensity of the present situations energies. Since the center card is The Moon itself, there is a strong indication that perception or misperception is coloring the entire spread and that how the querent perceives things has a significant impact on what energies come or go or stick around. Its actually rather auspicious when you think about it. I might add that this was a naturally drawn spread, I didn’t set it up that way as an example on purpose. Auspicious indeed. 🙂

The spread, if you are interested is a simple Past, Present, Future with a crossing card. Its laid out Present, Present Challenge (crossing-card), Past then Future.

Until next time, have a lovely week.

Borderless Edition of the Deviant Moon Tarot by Patrick Valenza

I’m so excited! US Games Systems has just released a borderless edition of Patrick Valenza’s Deviant Moon Tarot. This is one of my favorite tarot decks, but the borders were so disruptive that I actually trimmed them off, leaving the cards quite small. Here is a poster and a couple links for more information on this gorgeous and twisted set of cards.

Single Card Tarot Reading – November 21, 2013.

Goodmorning,
For today’s tarot reading I used the Deviant Moon Tarot again, but this time I used my trimmed copy. You will notice the border is missing if you compare today’s card to the Eight of Swords from Tuesday. (I have a post about trimming your deck on the agenda, but it will probably not be up for a month or two.) I keep and use both decks because I like it both with and without the borders. Also, the trimmed Deviant Moon is the only deck I use if I’m reading for reversals. I don’t have an exact reason for this beyond it “feels right”. And today we do in fact have a reversed card…

page wands reversed deviant moon  …Its the Page of Wands. The Page of Wands upright is a person who is full of enthusiasm and spontaneity. They are adventurous, playful and full of Joie De Vivre (Joy of Life). The also have a fresh perspective and come up with creative ways of doing things. Here we see our Page using stilts to get across this pond, ingenuity at work.

However, since the Page is reversed, we are asked to ponder his less desirable traits, in his shadow aspect the Page of Wands’ adventurousness and spontaneity becomes reckless. He is willful, stubborn and immature. You may see him throwing a temper tantrum if he doesn’t get his way. He can use his charisma to be manipulative and at his worst may represent a bully.

Watch out for these energies today, whether you see them coming up in yourself or in others. Since these energies are immature this person will not be reasoned with or understand why their behavior is inappropriate. Don’t feed the beast with arguing, best to just ignore them if you can. If you notice these traits coming up in yourself it may be a good idea to meditate on why you feel compelled to behave in such a way. What do you get out of this type of behavior? Is there a need getting filled when you act this way that you could fill in a healthier manner?

I hope everyone is having a great day. I will be back tomorrow with another single card tarot reading and I’m hoping to get another tarot spread posted soon, so stand by for that.

Best Wishes
